I first came upon this incredibly strange ginger (Zingiber spectabile) while touring a wonderful garden and wilderness retreat in Dominica called Papillote.
If you manage a trip to Dominica you must go there. We deeply regretted only making a late afternoon trip of it and should have booked a room and stayed overnight. I could have spent at least another full day slowly exploring that garden. A week would have been ideal. But with only an hour or two before dark, we had to rush through like maniacs pointing our cameras every which way and hoping for the best.
On the bright side, we ended the day soaking in a warm sulphur bath underneath the stars and next to a waterfall with bats flying over and little lightening bugs blipping around us. Wish I was there right now.
