My Brother’s Garden

Hey Internet,

Remember when I helped my brother make a container garden on his balcony? Behold, it LIVES!

He’s done really, really well for someone with almost no interest in gardening only a few months ago. I was concerned that I had overwhelmed him with plants through my own enthusiasm and that he wouldn’t be able to go from zero to a hundred like that overnight but he pulled it off and is obviously invested in keeping things alive. Sure, he never did get around to repotting the basil but the fact that they’re not dead yet considering those horribly undersized containers means he is caring for them. He is watering the garden every morning, the tomato is making tomatoes, the peppers are growing lots of peppers, and the herbs look really good.

He loves those herbs. I’d say they are by far his favourite part of the experience based on how much he goes on and on about all the great meals he has made from them. He even has a little stool that he brings outdoors to perch on when harvesting for a meal.

I am crazy proud! It’s almost embarrassing to admit to how much delight I am taking in this. I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds next spring.

  1. Wow. I’m quite impressed. He’s totally kicking my butt in the container gardening arena. All the green is so beautiful.

  2. Is that Rosemary with Thyme and Sage? I can not keep Rosemary alive for the life of me. How do you do it??

  3. Is that a chocolate mint? I want it for my tea now, NOW…

I wish I could teach my bro’s to embrace the greenery but they’d reduce anything I gave them to dust…

  4. ER: I’m not doing it in this case — he is. I think the rainy summer is helping. My rosemary is bigger then ever.

Van: That’s ‘Black Peppermint’ a variety that is very similar to Chocolate Mint in flavor. Very strong.

  5. I don’t care if my rosemary is small…I just want to keep it alive. I have had about 5 plants over the last two years and every single one has died. I have no idea what I am doing wrong.

  6. ER: My rosemary died too. It was killed off as a little baby plant with just a few stalks on it, about 8 inches tall. I think it was our heatwave and my forgetful nature during that hot week. *blush*

  7. the first thought that popped into my mind looking at the picture was “lush”. I think it shows that your brother likes the herbs best, they look the healthiest ;) Congratulations are definitely on order, to you, for turning him on to gardening, and to your brother for sticking with it and making things grow. And enjoying it!
